People, Place, and Time

Telling my family's stories

Daniel Black was born in Ireland about 1816, and came to Jo Daviess County, Illinois some time before 1850, setting up a farm in what was then called “Irish Hollow.” He donated some of his land for a school, called the “Black School,” and the road there is named after it. Here is a snip from the platt map showing Daniel Black’s land (house marked by the black dot, along with pictures from a few years back. The farm is still standing, as is (part) of the school.

Daniel Black > Margaret Black > Ellen Golden > Cora Moorehead > Elmer Ritenour > etc.
