Telling my family's stories
Mary Elizabeth (Batchellor) Lashell, wife of William Craig Lashell, died of Typhoid fever on March 16, 1880 in Woodland township of Carroll County, Illinois. The illness lasted 8 days. She was 53 years old. This is a snip from her death certificate.
Typhoid fever is caused by a strain of salmonella, usually spread by poor sanitation, and was quite common in the 19th century in the United States. These days, it’s more common in the so-called ‘developing world.’ Having had Typhoid fever myself, I wouldn’t recommend it.
