Telling my family's stories
Charles Muehlbauer married Irma Wilhelmine Johanna Bergeler on September 25, 1915 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Irma’s family has been real trouble for me, genealogically speaking.
Irma was born February 7, 1897 in Milwaukee, the daughter of Carl Bergeler and Maria Tank. Just so you know, ‘Carl’ is the German form of ‘Charles,’ and ‘Maria’ is commonly turned into English ‘Mary.’ Irma was the 7th of 8 children in the family, all of whom were born in Milwaukee:
Carl was born August 21, 1861 in Milwaukee, the son of Friederich Johann Bergeler and Johanna Herlemann, who were born and married somewhere in Prussia and had 11 children. Of those 11, I only know of names for 5.
So, the only thing I have to go on is ‘Neumark,’ which was listed as the birthplace on Wilhelmina’s marriage certificate to Heinrich Haase. I’ve done some rooting on Neumark, and think this refers to the province sometimes called “East Brandenburg.” This was the part of Brandenburg that was located east of the Oder river. It was absorbed into Prussia, then into the Weimar Republic, and then, after World War II, was ethnically-cleansed of its German population by the Allies and given to Poland.
