The Scherwitz farm

When Johann H. Georg Scherwitz brought his family to Wisconsin in 1845 (when Wisconsin was still a territory, not yet a state), he wanted to settle there.  On March 1st, 1848, he bought 52.5 acres of land from the federal government in Jefferson County: the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section one, township five north, range thirteen east  (i.e, in the township of Sumner).  Here is the grant, signed by President James K. Polk:

The farm remained in the Scherwitz family until 1994.  In 1983, the following history was written by Walter Scherwtiz, great-grandson of J.H. Georg Scherwitz.
